Principle 5: Liking and Rapport
People comply more readily with people they like. Attackers build rapport through:

- Name-dropping: referencing specific colleagues, managers, shared experiences
- Common ground: establishing shared context ("I saw on LinkedIn you went to Michigan — my sister went there")

The elements making this effective:
- Real employee name from LinkedIn (established identity)
- Recent office move (explains unfamiliarity, can't be contradicted by local knowledge)
- Specific manager name (authority figure corroboration)
- Plausible technical problem (VPN + email — common issues)
- Time pressure ("20-minute call")
- Manager reference deflects verification ("she's in a meeting")
- Recovery path for each possible objection
Countering this pretext:
The defense is a callback procedure. No credential reset or access change over an inbound call — period. The help desk calls back the employee at their registered extension or sends a reset through their registered email. If both are unavailable, the matter escalates to the employee's manager via a separate verification channel. A policy is not enough — it must be technically enforced and tested.
Vishing: Voice-Based Attacks
Voice phishing is particularly effective because:

Psychological Defenses That Actually Work
The naive approach to social engineering defense is training employees to be suspicious of everything. That approach fails because it is cognitively unsustainable — people cannot maintain maximum skepticism through a 40-hour workweek. Effective defense works with human psychology rather than against it.

An attacker who socially engineers a Tier 1 help desk employee gets:
- Ability to reset one regular employee's password
- NOT access to admin accounts, NOT domain admin credentials
This is dramatically different from a flat permission model where any IT staff member
can reset any credential in the organization.
Privileged Access Workstations (PAWs):
- Separate physical or virtual machines for admin tasks
- Never used for email, web browsing, or general work
- Reduces the attack surface for credential theft
Just-In-Time (JIT) access:
- Admin privileges granted on-request for specific tasks with time limits
- Not a standing permission that can be exploited via social engineering
AI Voice Defense: Emerging Protocols
As deepfake audio becomes realistic enough to defeat untrained human detection:
Safe word protocols: Pre-agree on a specific word or phrase for sensitive communications. Any call requesting unusual action (financial transactions, credential changes) must include the safe word. Attackers who don't know it cannot include it.
Video verification: High-value requests require live video confirmation rather than voice alone. Deepfake video is harder than audio (though the gap is closing rapidly in 2025-2026).
Process-enforced verification: The strongest defense is not human detection of synthetic audio — that task will eventually become impossible. The strongest defense is a process that requires verification through a documented channel regardless of who is calling or how convincing they sound.
Defense Checklist
Organizational controls:
- [ ] Wire transfer and large payment procedures require out-of-band voice verification to a pre-registered number — no exceptions, no urgency exemptions
- [ ] IT help desk has a documented, enforced callback procedure for all access changes
- [ ] Verification bypass requires manager approval and is logged/reviewed
- [ ] IT help desk permissions are tiered — Tier 1 has limited access that cannot compromise the entire organization
- [ ] New employees are clearly marked in internal systems and have a grace period where additional verification is applied
Technical controls:
- [ ] Hardware security keys (FIDO2) required for all privileged accounts — social engineering a help desk employee to reset credentials is useless if those credentials can't authenticate without physical hardware
- [ ] PAM (Privileged Access Management) with session recording for all admin actions
- [ ] JIT access for admin privileges (no standing domain admin sessions)
- [ ] DMARC reject policy on all company domains to prevent email impersonation
- [ ] Email filtering that flags messages from lookalike domains
Training controls:
- [ ] Quarterly phishing simulations with variant testing
- [ ] Annual vishing simulation program with baseline measurement and follow-up testing
- [ ] Physical security testing (tailgating) at least annually
- [ ] All employees trained on: out-of-band verification, reporting suspicious contacts, the types of requests that always require verification regardless of who is asking
- [ ] Help desk staff trained specifically on social engineering patterns targeting their function
- [ ] Safe word protocols established with executives and finance staff for high-value transactions
Cultural controls:
- [ ] "Report suspicious contacts" is explicitly encouraged — no negative consequences for false alarms
- [ ] Executives visibly support security policies rather than demanding exceptions
- [ ] Challenge culture for physical security — employees feel empowered to ask for badge verification
- [ ] De-emphasize social compliance instincts in security-critical roles ("it's okay to be inconvenient")
The attacker's advantage in social engineering is asymmetric: they need to succeed once. The defender needs to hold every time. The only way to shift this asymmetry is to make verification procedural — a step that happens automatically, not a judgment call made under social pressure by an individual employee trying to be helpful.
